THE CHINATOWN BUS INFO
(or how to travel between New York and Boston)

This web page was started in 2002 as a resource for information about the Chinatown bus schedule between Boston and New York..  I have finally decided to update the information!  The Chinatown bus situation is a moving target.. the price and even the names of the major players keeps changing.  So, to fix this problem, I've added a NYCBOS FORUM, which you (the user) can use to post the newest updates about the services.

Overall, I really enjoy the buses that I've taken.  They are quick, cheap, and safe.  Last time I checked it was $10 between Boston and New York on the most of the buses.   Almost all of the buses are the large type buses now, and they have luggage compartments below the passengers.   There is usually one stop at McDonalds each way where you have "10 minutes only!" for a bathroom break and maybe some fries.  If you do end up on one of the smaller buses (or vans) make sure you get a seat in the front, because it is generally more bumpy in the back.

NOTE:  I am in no way affiliated with any Chinatown bus company or any transportation company.  I'm just a person who supports mass transit and this site is for public information only.

some important links:
The NYCBOS Transportation Forum
A public forum where you can ask questions, give tips, discuss, and spread rumors about New York and Boston Transportation.  Please keep this forum clean, and use appropriate language.
Fung Wah Transport
The original Chinatown bus.  This web site is usually unloadable.  This bus is between New York Chinatown and Boston Chinatown and runs about once an hour.  They also seem to have a service to Providence, R.I.  Last time I checked the cost is $15 each way.  UPDATE: It appears that FUNG WAH has moved it's bus terminal to South Station.
Boston Deluxe
from Shahrukh Merchant: "$15 each way, but only 2 departures each day each way (around 8:30 am and 6 pm). For the extra $5, you get a slightly nicer bus, and more convenient locations (Prudential Center in Boston, Green Line/Prudential) and central Manhattan in NYC. (Seems to be run by one of the Chinatown bus companies but trying to cater to a more mainstream crowd.)"  (Thanks for the info Shahrukh!)
LuckyStar Bus
Lucky Star bus used to be TravelPack.  I've never used it, but I hear it's pretty much the same as Fung Wah bus and maybe a little less full.   If you have comments, please post them in the forum!...  Lucky Star used to be called Travel Pack.
Sunshine Tours
Yet another Chinatown bus.  This one is also $10!  Update: From Dave. V,  (August 14, 2004), Sunshine has discontinued the New York / Boston bus service.
Greyhound / Peter Pan for the less adventurous....  you can go with the more expensive service that goes between Boston South Station and New York Port Authority.  They have some good deals occasionally, but never approach $10.  Greyhound is now offering $30 round trips for certain trips.  An advantage here is that you can connect with all the subways that run to NYPA.  With student advantage card, you can usually get some sort of extra discount.
Amtrak The Train between Boston South Station and New York Penn Station.  I've actually taken option a lot lately because it has two advantages:  1) easy connections to NJ transit, and 2) power outlets to plug in my laptop.  They offer AAA and Student Advantage Discounts as well.
Ivy Media
This site sells tickets for many of the bus services.
New Century Travel A bus from New York to Philadelphia or Washington, D.C.
www.nysebus.com
This is yet another Chinatown bus from New York to Boston.  I ended up trying this bus because the others were sold out.  I left from the side of a street on the way from Chinatown to South Station.  It was also $15.  I got to New York in under 5 hours, but only after some crazy maneuvers down small streets in Brooklyn to avoid heavy traffic on the BQE.  It ends up at 96 Canal Street. (updated 12/30/2003)
LimoLiner
A new service.  It's a first class bus that runs between The Hilton Back Bay (Boston) to the New York Hilton.  I've never tried it, but it apparently has free wireless Internet, comfortable seats and refreshments.  The last time I checked their web site it was $69 each way.
